Room: Es ist ein schockierendes, aufwühlendes, dann auch wieder inspirierendes Buch, welches die Autorin Emma Donaghue hier abgeliefert hat. Parallelen zum schrecklichen Verbrechen in Amstetten (Fall Fritzl und sicherlich auch anderswo auf der Welt), hat die Autorin sich dafür entschieden, die Geschichte einer Gefangenschaft aus den Augen eines fünfjährigen Kindes zu erzählen. Als logische Folge auch mit dessen Stimme. Das ist ein gewagtes Unterfangen, wie viele Leser kritisch anmerken.

Die ersten paar Seiten des kindlichen Blablas (Grammatikfehler natürlich inklusive), garniert mit Naseweis-Aussagen, sind entsprechend zu lesen. Nach einiger Zeit gewöhnt man sich daran und ist irgendwie auch dankbar. Denn die naive Kindersprache kann das Grauen nicht beim Wort nennen.
Schließlich ist es in Gefangenheit geboren, als Kind seiner Mutter, die im Alter von 19 Jahren von „Old Nick“ entführt wurde. Seither wird sie gefangen gehalten und regelmäßig vergewaltigt. Alleine die Andeutungen des kindlichen Ich-Erzählers erfüllten den Leser mit unbändigem Hass auf solche menschlichen Monster. Zwangsweise lässt es den Leser innerlich nach mittelalterlichen Bestrafungsmethoden rufen.
Der Klappentext des Romans spricht von „überbordender Mutterliebe“. Ich habe im den unbändigen Drang zu überleben gespürt. Es ist mitreißend, welche Welt sich die beiden in dem winzigen Zimmer, in dem sie eingesperrt sind, erschaffen. Wie die Mutter den Tag strukturiert und damit wohl vermeidet, den Verstand zu verlieren. Und die Hoffnung nicht aufgibt, irgendwann aus der Gefangenheit zu entkommen.
